What workwear jacket is right for you?
Chore coats vs Barn coats, brands you should look at for great workwear, a list of second-hand steals you can buy right now, and more.
I’ve been getting hit non-stop for some workwear jacket recommendations recently, so let’s get right into it. The workwear jacket space is vast, with many styles and varieties to pick from. Chore and barn coats seem to be at the top of the conversation right now, but there are plenty of other options that we aren’t talking enough about.
In today’s newsletter, we’ll look at different workwear jacket styles to get new ideas flowing, what brands you should look at, a list of amazing second-hand options that I found if you’re looking to save some money, stores I’ve been gatekeeping for some serious vintage workwear, and more.
Like I said earlier, chore and barn coats are all the rage right now. Although I’ve been seeing some discourse around how chore coats are out and barn coats are in—which I find to be silly, in my opinion. Why can’t we enjoy both without having to downplay one style or the other? Who cares? Wear whatever, whenever. If you’re someone who doesn’t subscribe to the trend cycle, then you’ll have a much more enjoyable time just wearing clothes without overthinking it.
With all of that being said, I have noticed a recent spike in interest in the field coat, specifically this one from L.L.Bean.
The L.L.Bean Field Coat has been taking the internet by storm with their latest release that’s a little bit difficult to get your hands on, but I’m here to plug you with a store that will let you purchase the stuff from overseas. I’m not going to lie though, it’s going to require some work, as the store that carries them over in Japan accepts internal orders via private inquiry. You’ll see that there is an option to submit a form to inquire about purchasing overseas, allowing you to make that purchase via credit card. Once you plug in the details on what color and size you’re looking for, the store will get back to you and arrange your order. Don’t be alarmed because this is pretty common for stores in Asia, so there shouldn’t be any issues. Also, it’s just good to remember, you want the good stuff? You’re going to have to work for it.
There are other options if you’re not trying to do all that though. The market for vintage L.L.Bean field coats is booming, with many of them priced between $100-$200. Many of them are even better quality and come in way better colors than the ones made today. But where do you find them? Obviously, to find the good stuff requires some digging, but places like eBay, Grailed and even Etsy are riddled with jackets for you to grab right now.
L.L.Bean is just one great brand that you should look at when shopping for vintage coats. I would also keep your eyes open for workwear coats from brands like Polo, Schaefer Outfitter, GAP, Lee, Land’s End, and even Timberland. To get you started on your search, I’ve created a list of second-hand options you can shop right now using the link here. The vintage space is filled with timeless classics. The prices are amazing and you can get a true vintage coat anywhere between $60-$200. Which is a steal these days.
If you’re too lazy to go digging, then go somewhere that does all the curation for you. I’m talking about online vintage stores that are constantly updating their stock with heat. I have a couple of stores I frequent when I’m on the hunt for some true vintage outerwear
I will say that true authentic vintage, especially in the workwear category can get steep in price. It goes by case-by-case basis, so you really have to search for deals to pop up. The best case scenario is you take it offline and start thrifting at your local to find that real good deal you’re looking for.
