What do you wear to a wedding these days?
A guide on how to approach finding the right fit for that special occasion.
Wedding season is almost upon us and I have no idea what to wear. Ok, that’s not entirely true, but I do know that I don’t want to wear the same thing I wore last year. I have to look good. Summer weddings are on the horizon and that’s a good time to go big on an outfit that you might not get to wear every day. It’s an outfit you need to look good in and most importantly, feel comfortable in. Especially if you’re going to be in it the entire day.
Some of us are at the point in our lives where we start getting invited to weddings, and that’s a fun opportunity to do something different. This is a good time to explore the little details that can make the entire execution feel more luxurious. So in today’s newsletter, we’re going to look at ways to develop an outfit for that special occasion, a few brands I like to look at first, and some other recommendations that will help you make your idea come to life.
Last year I wrote a similar article on how to dress for a special occasion — I recommend giving it a read. Realistically the more information the better. Having a better understanding of what you need to focus on when building an outfit like this, will make your final purchasing decisions much stronger.
Everyone is different, and different weddings have all sorts of various vibes when it comes to the dress code. Sometimes you can only go as far as a straightforward suit and call it a day. But some occasions do give you the freedom to express yourself more creatively. I’m not an expert in suiting, but if you’re looking to go with a more classic look, then I recommend hitting up a local tailor if you can. Doing this process in person will be a much easier experience.
I enjoy experimenting and putting different pieces together to create a vibe that would work for that sort of occasion. Usually, when I’m building an outfit like this I’m starting with the bottoms first, always. I then start looking at shirts, then shoes, and then from there if I need to, I can grab a blazer or any other layers. Then I will finish things off by looking at the details, belts, socks, jewelry, sunglasses if applicable, and whatever other detail ideas come to mind.
When it comes to pants I always enjoy going for something light and flowy. That’s why I was initially drawn to the Scene Trousers from mfpen. (I was also drawn to that safety pin with the pearl detail around the belt look. After hitting them up directly I found out that these don’t come with the pants though. Sucks, but I’ll live). The pants still rock though, we have double pleats in a wide tapered fit, that has a nice flowy look that’s relaxed and will create some great natural creasing.
I recommend doing a deep dive on their trousers and just mfpen in general. They have a lot of great blazers and shirts, and the items are just better when paired together. I think you can easily get your entire outfit here if you want to. Their styling is great too, so if you don’t end up getting anything, it’s a good place to get some inspiration as you figure out what you’re going to wear.
You can shop mfpen directly on their website here. I will say that their sizing might be confusing to some, but each product comes with a size chart which you can find in the product photos — a good rule of thumb is to measure an existing item of yours that fits you well and apply that to whatever new product you’re buying.
Another good brand that’s more on the affordable side is NN07. This Danish brand is going to be great for those who are looking for something a little bit more form-fitting this season. You can easily spend under $350 on a good shirt and pants combo, which is a win in my books.
