It’s that time of the year again. Brick season is in full effect, meaning it’s time to whip out some serious outerwear to protect us from the cold. I love getting a new winter jacket each season because here in Montreal, it’s an item you won’t be taking off for months, so you might as well get something you enjoy wearing. The problem for me is that I sort of don’t need to get a new one because I’m still very content with my rotation from last year.
New year brings new styles though, and today I have a nice little guide to get you up to speed on what’s currently out there worth looking at. I’ve put together a list of some stores that have a good selection of brands that you should know about, what brands make some of my favorite puffers, more budget-friendly puffers as well as items on sale, and more.
ON A BUDGET
If you need a simple puffer and don’t want to spend an insane amount of money then I suggest looking at brands like Stussy, Dime and thisisneverthat as a start. They usually tend to have a huge variety of great styles that seems to be readily available to purchase online, are well made, and you get a solid product for the money you spend.
Some of my favorites from Stussy are shown above and are currently available at their store here — bunch of other styles there that I didn’t mention as well. These all come equipped with 90% duck and 10% feather, so you can expect some nice level of warmth. The nylon exterior will repel some light moisture, but if you’re looking to get protection from a more heavy rain or snow situation, then I recommend something with GORE-TEX.
Dime’s recent Holiday ‘24 collection introduced two solid puffer varieties. The Tweed Puffer has a removable hood which is a nice little detail. I actually picked up one of the ripstop puffers — shown at the bottom — from the collection and absolutely love it. The wavy stitch detailing is not too flashy but keeps things fun in an outfit. It’s extremely light but still gives that adequate protection from the cold. A very solid piece that I’ll be wearing a lot this winter.
Sizes are kind of limited on the Dime website, but I suggest hitting their stockist list as they have many to see what the stock is. Should be pretty easy to acquire.
Thisisneverthat is currently having a sale on their puffers on their site here — not entirely sure when this sale is going on until so I wouldn’t sleep on these. Thisisneverthat outerwear is underrated in my opinion. Very solid construction that is built to last. Go with your true size and enjoy a solid jacket that’s going to keep you warm without issues.
STORES WITH VARIETY
In these reports I tend to highlight specific brands, which I think is fine, but focusing on specific shops that have very good curation is an even better approach to finding what you might like. Below are some spots that I keep handy when I don’t know exactly what I want but need a place to start as a form of inspiration.
