Hey everyone! Had to take a momentary break from the newsletter content as I was moving to a new SNL HQ… better known as my apartment. With that behind me, it’s time to get back to business by giving out the hottest recommendations on the internet.
During my move I came to a realization that while my shorts lineup for this summer is good, it could definitely use an overhaul to be even better. This week’s Shorts Report™ is not only for the people, but for my own personal need as well. I’m going to do my best to feature some 5” inseam shorts because I know a lot of you are into that vibe—I personally rock 7” because my legs are long so the 5” inseam is just not the right vibe for me, but I respect all of my leg warriors out there.

WE FLY HIGH
I’ve been noticing more and more styles of shorts hitting below the knees lately. I don’t see the above-the-knee shorts being replaced anytime soon, but we definitely can’t disregard the basketball vibe being a solid contender for all of our summer needs—If you got long legs like me then you’ll understand that longer shorts are a pretty solid option when it comes to choosing your style.
Needles’ take on the basketball shorts is really interesting. It’s rather simple, but the poly cloth has an interesting shine to it that takes a boring basketball short to the next level. Don’t forget that most poly pieces retain a good amount of heat, so if you’re in an environment that gets hotter than the sun itself, then maybe these won’t be the best option for you!
GREAT WITH ANYTHING
Dime’s latest Spring/Summer collection was filled with great pieces, but the one that stuck out to me the most was their shorts. A great variety of colors paired with their wavy signature detailing at the bottom, and the embroidered logo make this a very solid pair of shorts for the season.
My personal favorite color has to be the mint! The slanted pockets are a huge detail that might be overlooked—I find shorts pockets are often either too shallow or shaped weirdly for me to be able to put my hands or items in them. I know, I know… who puts their hands in the pockets of their shorts? Madness!!
FOR THE COLDER OCCASION
For the better chunk of last year’s summer, I wore nothing but sweatshorts—Ones from Dime to be specific. Despite the scorching sun, every person should have at least one pair of sweatshorts in the rotation because the comfort level isn’t talked about enough.
These shorts by Bather come in great colors, and for only $75 these will definitely be a great budget purchase. There isn’t much to say about the French Terry cotton used for these, except that it’s extremely soft and if you ever owned a pair of French Terry’s then you already know the vibe. If you haven’t, I definitely suggest you go down this path because you will not be disappointed—cozy overload!!
I didn’t forget about my 5” inseam enthusiasts!! Bather also offers a variety of 5.5” inseams in crazy sizes and styles—from XS all the way to XXL. Definitely a good option to keep in mind, especially when they are under $100.
PLEATS AREN’T ONLY FOR PANTS
I want to see more shorts using pleats! Maybe that’s just me though, but I am a big fan of these pleated shorts from Battenwear. If you’re an avid reader of the SNLetter then you should recognize this brand as I have been suggesting it in various newsletters in the past.
Great quality, these shorts aren’t on the cheap end, but if you are willing to ball out this is going to be a good place to start. Three different pocket styles, while having a wide-leg fit? Love it! This is definitely not your regular pair of shorts, and that excites me. These will be a lot of fun to pair with a dress shirt—it’s kind of like you’re going for a formal look but instead of pleated pants, they are shorts.
ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Saturdays NYC is having a moment—their recent Spring/Summer collection was filled with heat, and their latest drop features a variety of amazing shorts that should be on your radar.
We have to meet in the middle here since these Joby Mountain Shorts come in a 6” inseam—consider this the equator of the shorts fit. The Elastic belt is a nice addition, especially if you are looking for a Gramicci-like alternative!
If you’re looking to spend the big bucks to look flyer than most, then you need to check out the Talley Iridescent Swim Short, which comes in two great colorways. This one will definitely turn some heads because it’s not every day you see some fly iridescent bottoms, especially once they start shining in some sun.
If you enjoy the style of the Iridescent short but are not a big fan of the iridescent detailing itself—understandable honestly, sometimes it might be too much for certain people—then the Regular Swim Short is going to be a great alternative—I wasn’t kidding when I said they were killing it lately, there are too many shorts to choose from!!
5 INCH GOODNESS
This next recommendation is only $40 and comes in 5” inseam—a dream right? These ASICS shorts only come in two colorways, but for the price, you might as well double up and get both colors.
What I love about these shorts is that they are made entirely out of recycled polyester from plastic bottles. Just something about a great-looking product that is made with our planet in mind—that gets me going!!
This concludes the first round of The Shorts Report™—the report would have been longer but substack told me I was already reaching the email length :( —Part 2 of The Shorts Report™ will be coming soon to paid subscribers only!
