The Light Jacket Report
Brands making great outerwear that you need to know about, styles I'm wearing right now, and more!
We are currently in that part of the season called the perfect time to put a fit on. Layering season is officially upon us, which makes this the most exciting time to get dressed again. I think many fashion enjoyers were ready to move on from the summer — even I felt that my outfits became more repetitive near the end of the season as I continued to hold off from spending in hopes of going off on new jackets for fall.
So that’s where we are at now. A perfect opportunity to whip out your favorite jacket that you haven’t worn in months or go on the hunt for something new and exciting. As I refreshed my outerwear rotation recently, I remembered that one does not simply have only one jacket. You need different styles for various weather conditions and just overall swag purposes. In today’s newsletter, I wanted to share what outerwear styles I’m keeping my eyes on right now, a few brands you should keep in mind when shopping for new jackets, and more!
It’s a sort of difficult to recommend jackets because there is so much variety out there, and it all depends on your climate and what sort of vibe you’re trying to go for. You know, you have your technical stuff that’s great for the rain and wind. This is a piece that’s essential in everyone’s wardrobe, but you’re probably not going to wear that to a dinner, right? Now we’re entering a whole territory of collared jackets, maybe a leather piece, or a long coat… which are all valid choices to go with. Then you have the super loud options that might not be the most ideal for everyday wear, but are great to make a statement for a special occasion.
I believe the best way to approach this is to look at what jackets you’re currently obsessed with in your personal wardrobe and then try to acquire something that’s slightly different from that piece — getting that versatility is going to pay off in the long run because there’s really no point of getting two of the same jackets. Unless, you’re trying to upgrade the quality of your current favorite, or you’re simply balling, then that’s a different story.
A hot style tip that I have is don’t be afraid to wear two jackets at once. It might sound silly but sometimes a leather piece paired with a long coat is a huge vibe, that also works with denim jackets as well. Sometimes pairing a work blouson with a collar worn underneath a MA-1 bomber is also a huge vibe. — it all comes down to experimenting and seeing what works. What I’m trying to say is, don’t keep yourself in a box by thinking you can only wear a jacket with a button up or a simple shirt and that’s that. Get creative and you might surprise yourself by giving new life to a jacket you haven’t really worn much lately.
Now, I don’t want to dive into style trends that are popping off right now because I think that is the wrong way to approach style in general. There’s nothing wrong at looking, but structuring your entire style on what someone else wears is probably not that ideal long term. Wear what looks good on you and not some random dude on the explore page, you know?
One of the easiest ways to approach this idea is to go out in the field and go look at clothes in person. Don’t be afraid to try things on and not buy anything… So many times I pull up to the store just to go 0-24 — 0 things purchased, 24 items tried on. And honestly it helps you understand what shapes work, what colors to look for and ultimately you’ll have a better idea of what quality is. Which something that’s hard to understand when you’re shopping online.
