The new Supreme season has arrived! FW23 brings us an array of exciting new pieces, all while bringing back classic designs from the past with a mix of insane accessories to remind us that Supreme is still at the top of the ladder. Today’s newsletter isn’t about “Supreme’s Return” or “Supreme Is Back” because the truth is, they’ve never left.
It seems as though many people talk about how the brand has been putting out trash, but I don’t think that’s really true. While there are always going to be items that are not for everyone, it doesn’t mean that the collection is trash. It’s important to keep an open mind when it comes to clothes, and that means returning to the preview several times before making your final decision about a collection — don’t get me wrong, some stuff isn’t the best and that’s fine.
Supreme is still very much at the core of the culture, I mean the people are fighting in the streets on drop day again! We are so back! The way Supreme uses references, enlisting an array of artists, paying homage to past seasons, all while creating a collection that feels fresh and exciting is just all the proof you need that Supreme is still here to play.
Enough of all that though, let’s take a look at my favorite items from this collection — remember, opinions change and maybe something that didn’t make today’s picks will make its impact at a later date. Also, I know I’m late because the first drop already happened, but this week is #vacation mode for me, and while I really wish I could have finished this newsletter before the first drop, time was not working in my favor.
OUTERWEAR
Supreme’s outerwear game has always been strong, and this season continues to prove this statement. From shearling bomber jackets with Schott, to re-releases of pieces from 2009, there’s going to be something that will end up grabbing your attention. On top of that, I’m hyped to see H.R. Giger making an appearance this season alongside some other great artists.
Below are my favorite outerwear pieces from Supreme FW23:
Not to put every single jacket from FW23 in this newsletter, but there is a lot of really good outerwear. Not sure how I’m going to narrow it down because I can’t just be only buying Supreme again — not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just like variety.
The pin vest might be one of the most underrated pieces in this collection, but only if those pins are removable. Still trying to figure out if that’s the case though. The 2 in 1 GORE-TEX Liner Jacket might be my favorite outerwear piece of the season. There’s a hint of past Supreme in this one, and if you’ve been around since the early 2000’s then you’ll know what I mean.
SHIRTS
The offerings for FW23 aren’t the craziest when it comes to shirts, but there are a few that could definitely make a great addition to my wardrobe this year. I personally like the Loose Fit Stripe Shirt as well as the Lined Flannel Snap Shirt. Definitely would have loved more variety but it is what it is.
TOPS
A lot of good tops this season, and the more I keep coming back to the preview, the more tops I need to add to my personal rotation — of course, if money wasn’t an object that is but that’s not my reality so I’ll have to pick and choose what I can cop this season. A lot of great simple knits that might remind you of BEAMS, which I don’t think is a bad thing. Remember, visually they might seem similar but you’re going to get a much looser fit when buying knits from Supreme.
I decided to group the sweaters with the hoodies into one section and label it as “Tops”. I do wish that the Hooded Soccer jersey was somehow removable, but maybe we’ll just have to perform surgery on a jersey to get the results we’re looking for.
BOTTOMS
Pants are kind of a miss for me this season. Look, there’s nothing wrong with the selection — I was hyped to see Supreme getting YaTuSabe to do some work for their recent collection which I really enjoy. But the truth is, if I’m going to be getting pants by YaTuSabe for example, I’d rather go straight to the source and support his business in full. Supreme has some good selvedge options, but again, if I’m thinking of doing that I’d rather go with someone like Sugarcane for example.
TEES
The selection this year is kind of lacking as well, but I will say that the walkie-talkie tee might be my favorite item of the entire season — I don’t know why, but I just loved that camo one. A few great cut-and-sew pieces with graphics that are familiar to many of us:
OTHER
Everything else including hats, bags, accessories and whatever else I missed will be grouped in the “other” section. Just to save all of us some time, you know? Bags is a complete skip for me. I don’t really need any bags and the ones offered this season aren’t really doing it. Similar to the pins vest mentioned above, if the crusher comes with removable pins then it’s a wrap! Not sure what the final verdict is though as I’ve been hearing yes and no to the pins being removable.
Beanie season is approaching, which means that it’s time to start collecting that dome-protection research. While Supreme is known to recycle a few common beanie styles, there are always a few unique options that definitely grab my attention. Here are some of my favorites — I clearly have a specific type of beanie right now…
I had to save the best for last. Many have tried but at the end of the day, nobody does accessories the way Supreme does them. Some are useful, and some are completely unnecessary, but that’s why I love them. They also know exactly where to apply the pressure to stay relevant through their accessories. Take the Koss headphones for example… the tiktok NPC’s are about to have a field day with this one. They even made a side table/stool entirely made out of box logo stickers, and if that wasn’t enough why not get the 4D human model skull with embossed logo teeth?
Supreme’s accessory game is enough to remind us why they deserve the best seat at the table.
And that pretty much wraps up the FW23 season. Definitely looking forward to all the collaborations and just the return of some classic streetwear vibes again. Supreme may have fallen for some, but to a lot of people, the brand continues to do its thing.
