How to accessorize in style
What brands to watch for good quality beanies, scarves, and gloves.
The SNL mailbox has been blowing up with requests for accessories recently, so I had to come correct. In today’s newsletter, we are pushing the clothes aside to focus on beanies, scarves and gloves. Important items that you shouldn’t neglect in your wardrobe, in my opinion. You may not be wearing them as often throughout the year, but when you do, you should make sure that what you have is made well and also looks good — one thing I dislike is seeing someone going off with their clothes to simply butcher the outfit by pairing some dusty accessories that just don’t work.
Don’t get me wrong, it takes time to get a good lineup of accessories that you enjoy wearing. It’s one of those things that you should probably spend a little bit more money on because it will be much more enjoyable to wear, it will last longer, and you won’t have to buy a new round of accessories the following year — so in a way, you’re saving money long term.
SPOTS FOR BEANIES
The world of headwear is intense. There are a lot of options and the numerous styles can make things a little bit overwhelming when trying to find the perfect choice for yourself. I honestly had to go through a period where I couldn’t find a beanie that looked good on me. Through trial and error and seeing stuff in person did help though — if you’re in the same boat you need to get out there and just try stuff on to see what looks good and what doesn’t. Educate yourself first, learn what looks good and then take that expertise to the computer when you’re shopping online.
If you’ve already done that and just need some recommendations to where you can shop for cool styles online then here’s a list of some spots that you should keep in mind. These spots offer style variety and most importantly, they are under $100 — a beanie for anything above like $150 is kind of wild and I don’t know if it’s necessary to actually spend that much.
The Outsiders store is my first stop whenever I’m looking for new beanies. The selection isn’t massive, but they do have a solid way of curating their catalog. I’m personally into skullcaps at the moment, and this store has a lot of good variety of them. More outdoor vibes, so you can expect brands like Patagonia, Montbell, Klättermusen, Gramicci and a bunch more.
Although Adsum only has two styles available in their store right now, and I really like both of them. Adsum also just makes nice stuff in general, so if you want something that’s made well and doesn’t cost too much, then these will be a good choice for anyone — I’m a big fan of the fleece beanies myself, it gets cold here so that extra layer of warmth is going to be clutch.
If you’re just trying to spend $50 max on a beanie and just need something easy to throw on, then you should honestly go with Stussy. They always pump out great styles that end up sitting in their store. Quality is good for the price you’re paying, I have worn a bunch of them and never had any complaints — would be even sicker if they had no branding on them, but it’s not the end of the world. If anything you could always wear that logo at the back of your head.
Now, I know a lot of you may want something even more simple, just that classic menswear adjacent vibe to match with your overcoat this season. If you’re going with that route then I recommend you focus on the actual quality of the knit, and a good way to do that is with Drake’s. Priced at $95, you’re getting classic knit beanies crafted using lambswool, which is essentially like wearing a cloud on your head — cozy and warm.
GLOVES
Right now, I’m really into the more technical glove style. They tend to focus more on the build quality, and they usually all look great. The real secret behind getting gloves like this for the low is hitting your local hardware store and seeing what they have on the shelves. You’d be surprised at the amount of good designs that are just sitting there. If your local doesn’t have what you need though then here are a couple of recommendations to get you started.
