Fashion Q's + Gearing Up For Spring
A look at a bunch of spring collections that should be on your radar.
Hey! I’m back with another jam-packed newsletter filled with some Q & A’s, and a look at some recent spring collections that are dropping soon—February is a fun month because the drops and announcements start rolling out and before we know it, our wallets begin to beg us to reconsider our financial decisions.
Last week I asked the followers over on my Instagram to hit me with all of their fashion-related questions, and today I will be going through some of them to hopefully give you the recommendations that your heart desires—If you didn’t see your questions answered, don’t worry, I will do my best to hit you up privately (or save them for another newsletter).
Q: If you were doing a capsule wardrobe what would be some must-haves?
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is interesting to me. (A capsule wardrobe is a limited selection of pieces that are easily interchangeable and complement each other). This is something that I want to do myself, but every time I try I just end up hoarding clothes—sometimes I find a uniform, wear nothing but the 3 items I love at that moment, then forget about it entirely, and repeat that process.
If I were to force myself to stick to a capsule, these are the items that I would definitely need to have:
The Uniqlo U tee should be in everyone's rotation, capsule or not. A crisp white tee is a no-brainer and goes with any type of outfit. You can tuck it, untuck it, stretch the collar, roll the sleeves, do whatever you want with it—the world is yours.
If we are doing a capsule then you only need 1 pair of really good denim, that’s why going the Japanese route is highly encouraged because the quality speaks for itself. (Brands like Sugarcane, Japan Blue, Momotaro, Iron Heart, Big John are a good place to start, but there are plenty of resources to get you started). If you choose to go down the selvedge denim path, just don’t become that person who only talks about how they don’t wash their jeans when you get invited to a friendly dinner—nobody wants to hear that.
If you don’t want to go the denim route then you should just hit the thrift because you will end up finding a perfect pair of pants for the low—go in with an open mind and don’t look for a specific item because you’re going to be left disappointed. Some of my favorite pants I own have been thrifted. and it wasn’t pants I was necessarily looking for. Once I held them in person I just knew these were going to be for me.
Now that you’ve built your base, you can easily add any sort of shoe, boot, or loafer, match that with any sort of outerwear piece, or just rock the t-shirt and denim combo—the choice is yours. The white tee/quality denim base is easily interchangeable and will work with any type of added layering, so invest at the foundation and add the garnish (jackets/sweaters/hats) after.
Q: Which IG fashion brands aren’t trash?
This one is more of a YouTube brand, but I guess we can group IG/YouTube/TikTok into one social umbrella. If you’ve been around long enough then you’ve heard of Magnus’ YouTube channel—If not, the link is there.
Usually, social media people + making a brand = oh no why did you do this? But in this case, it’s different because the Ronning brand is actually good.
What I really love about Ronning is their lack of branding!! While they do focus on a lot of basics like hoodies, crewnecks, and sweats, you’ll also get some different things like accessories, and footwear. This is pretty impressive to me and really sets the bar for other YouTubers and just social media people in general—it should be more than just a logo, I want to see what you really want people to wear.
Q: Cool pant options for a guy who’s almost 6’8 with a 36” inseam?
It’s bad… I mean really bad. There is a very small amount of brands that are making 36” inseam pants on the regular, and that needs to change. A.P.C. will be a good place to start as they offer pants with inseams all the way up to 37”. The denim brands that I mentioned in the first question will definitely have 36” inseam options, so I definitely recommend checking out these brands - Nudie, Naked and Famous, Sugarcane, Japan Blue, Momotaro, Iron Heart, Big John.
Polar Skate Co. pants are offered in 34” inseam, which isn’t ideal but might work because they fit really baggy. Sizes are limited and you will most likely have to look around their own website as well as their stockists like Parade and Think Empire.
BACK TO OUR REGULAR SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING
I have a love-hate relationship with Palace. Sometimes I’m really into the collections, then I go through phases where I don’t like anything they drop. With that being said, it seems like I’m back to a loving mood with Palace’s recent SS22 collection.
I really think Palace is at its best when they don’t go overboard with the branding, and while that’s a rare occurrence, it’s a great one when it does happen. I can deal with a little bit of branding—it’s not a deal-breaker, but I am not rocking a piece with a massive triferg on the back, you feel me?
A lot of good outerwear and layering pieces this time around, but you should check out the full range here, and let me know your thoughts on this collection in the comments below!
ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER SKATE BRAND
We really owe it to the skaters for being the source for everything that is cool. Pop Trading Company has been on my radar for a minute now, and while they have been releasing some solid collections, their Spring Summer 22 collection really grabbed my attention.
It’s simple, has a lot of different pieces that make it feel more than just a skate brand, and is important because I need versatility when it comes to the outfit—I am trying to look good on and off the board without needing to switch up my fit in the middle of the day.
THISISANOTHERLOOKBOOK
It looks like it’s going to be a big year for Thisisneverthat. Dropping their latest Spring lookbook and announcing their New Balance collaboration all in the same week is a big way to start off 2022. Click here for the New Balance collaboration, and click here for the Spring 2022 Lookbook.
Overall a really solid start to the year for the brand, and this is a pretty big collection for just Spring!!—those shorts are speaking to me, really love the wavy paneling. Can’t wait to see what is to come from Thisisneverthat throughout the year.
