8 movies with incredible sunglasses
Diving into classic films for inspiration for timeless sunglasses styles, vintage sunglasses on a budget you can buy right now, and more!
Been deep into the movie references lately, but instead of doing the classic “favorite looks from so and so”, I wanted to do something a little bit different. The heat is here, which is the perfect opportunity to find a new pair of shades to be obsessed with for the summer. At this point I’ve amassed a variety of styles in my personal rotation that offer something different. I think it’s important to branch out and own frames that might be wilder than others. A simple fit gets turned up with a pair of the right shades, and that’s what we’re going to be talking about it today.
In today’s newsletter, we’re diving into vintage sunglasses—with several movie references featuring some of our favorite actors in incredible frames, a list of sunglasses you can cop right now for the low, styles for under $50, and more!
8 1/2 (1963)
Starting us off strong with a pair of Prada SPR 07 worn by Marcello Mastroianni in 8 1/2—a film that oozes classic menswear swag that’s just as relevant today as it was in ‘63. I did find these on eBay, but they aren’t cheap, and that’s mainly because of Marcello’s character in the film that ended up leaving such a significant impact on this particular style from Prada—they hype machine got to them!!
If you want something similar but cheaper, I would recommend browsing the Prada SPR08G, a slightly more oval shape to the frame, while still bearing similarities to the SPR 07. Another good alternative could could be the Ray-Ban RB4335 as well.
DIRTY HARRY (1971)
One of Clint Eastwood’s absolute classic performances. For his detective role, Clint is going classic with a pair of B&L Bausch Lomb Balorama from Ray Ban. Not too difficult to find these for under $200 and as low as $60 in some cases. I found a pretty much brand new pair on eBay here.
The Ray Ban RB4194’s have a very similar shape to the Balorama’s and can be acquired for under $50.
THE MAN WHO FELL FROM EARTH (1976)
Still trying to figure out what glasses David Bowie was rocking in his 1976 Sci-Fi film, The Man Who Fell From Earth. Based on what I gathered, these were specifically designed for his role in the film. Since then companies like Etnia Barcelona have dropped tribute collections to recreate these amazing frames for us to enjoy.

The Rodenstock Zermatt from 1970s is another pair of similar frames that were part of Bowie’s collection. Seems as though these pop up on ebay quite often, so I would recommend doing a regular check on eBay to score yourself a pair.
SNATCH (2000)
